winter…
I don’t know about you, but I’m well over winter.
The past couple of weeks have been particularly trying – we’ve had a sick child for the past 10 days which never bodes well in the sleep department. Needless to say we’ve experienced sleep deprivation as though we’ve got a newborn.
The calendar seasons suggest that spring is on its way, September marks the turn in weather. Maybe then we’ll get to put the new summer clothes to use. Until then they lurk on coat hangers, tempting us with their pretty colours and cuts… willing a warmer season to hurry up.
Soon enough we’ll be complaining about the effects of humidity on our hair and feeling too hot. Soon enough, I’ll become paranoid about topping up sunscreen on the back of my hands while driving. I’ll head to the beach with hats, scarves and swaddles to prevent over exposure to the sun. I’ll toss and turn at night in a sticky heap.
Until then, I can only hope this tough time passes quickly. A cold, wet, miserable winter is hard enough but when coupled with a sick child it becomes just that much more trying. I know I’m not alone.
Worse still are the reports of swine flu around the country. A friend got sick with it and it sounded like the most painful flu ever. We left packages of food at her doorstep and it took her over a week to fully recover. She’d just returned from a work trip to Europe. Was it the flight? Or just her bad luck? Perhaps her immunity was down due to the travelling. However she got it, it spread from contact with another sick person – somewhere, somehow.
We haven’t, yet, put our daughter in daycare, simply because we haven’t needed to. Somehow between us we’ve juggled her and work. It’s been hard but when it’s the dark depths of winter I feel grateful. Ironically, the week she got sick was after we decided she needed to socialise more so we took her to a community playgroup. There was a snotty nosed child there that was coughing. I could kill that mother for taking him there! If you’re sick, stay at home. Wrap up warm and keep your germs to yourself.
Bring on the sunshine.
