Beauty Spot: Fleur Revell-Devlin
In this week’s Beauty Spot we’ve spoken to Fleur Revell-Devlin. This mother of two has over 15 years of experience in New Zealand’s media industry and has several notches on her belt including editor of magazine New Idea, news reporter for TVNZ’s One News and several television presenter roles including Who’s House is it Anyway? and her own Revell Without a Cause. These days Fleur is one of the directors at public relations company Impact PR and beauty and fashion are just two of her specialities.

What’s your earliest makeup memory?
Blue eye shadow and lots of it!
What was your first perfume?
My mother’s Estee Lauder Private Collection, then Anais Anais by Cacharel.
Now, do you have a signature scent? (or do you rotate one of many?)
Definitely a one scent woman, it’s Coco, by Chanel
Describe your everyday makeup look and what products you use:
It depends if I have a meeting then it’s usually the works! I tend to go for a slightly darker eye and lighter lip even during the day. I love MAC and Napoleon and my absolute favourite Napoleon lipstick is called Hess. I also really love MAC Patisserie lipstick. If it’s a no meeting day that generally means I’m with the children so it’s quite minimal. I’m fastidious about sunblock through winter and summer. I use Olay Regenerist Superstructure Cream SPF 30 – it protects and improves the skin surface at the same time.
How do you change this for night?
It’s just a slightly darker eye- I love MAC’s tarnish eye liner, then again pale lips. Or I might have less on the eye and a darker more plum coloured lipstick.
What was the last item of makeup you bought?
A Napoleon Foundation Stick –works wonders in a flash for busy mums!
What’s on your shopping list to get?
I’m pretty lucky to have gorgeous skincare and hair care products at my fingertips. Makeup is generally the only thing I have to spend time looking for. I’m keen to try one of the new conditioning mascaras.
Biggest hair/makeup disaster you’ve had?
That would have to be a close tie between the bad hair extensions (10 years ago) or deciding to dye my hair black. Oh and there was a combination of the two, that is dyed black hair with extensions – when it all snapped off I was left with a mullet.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the industry?
That cheaper supermarket beauty brands can give you just as good a result as the more expensive ones.
Best beauty discovery?
1. Sleep.
2. Flaxseed oil.
3. Olay Microsculpting Cream.
4. And a wide brimmed sunhat.
Ultimate indulgence is?
A facial followed by a manicure and pedicure at Verdo Nails in Parnell – bliss.
What advice would you tell the younger you if you could go back in time?
You are not as fat as you think you are, don’t colour your hair, trying to wax your own underarms is never a good idea, EVER.
Has motherhood changed your beauty routine and if so, in what way?
Absolutely I have two pre-schoolers so it’s pretty full-on. For me the priority every morning is sunblock for them, my husband and me. None of us leave the house without it, winter or summer.
MoleMap is one of my clients and I cannot believe how cavalier we still are as a nation about Melanoma when it kills hundreds of us every year.
Does it take you long to get ready?
No I’m way down the list when I have a four year old daughter fighting for the mirror!
What would you do if you had more time to get ready?
Sharpen my makeup pencils, polish my shoes and make sure my handbag had been cleared of all toys, crayons, baby wipes, raisins and overdue parking tickets.
Are you an eyes or lips girl?
Eyes!
Favourite nail polish colour?
Soft and neutral- I love OPI ones they last really well.
Long nails or short?
Short!
What’s the one beauty product you’ve used for years and can’t give up?
Venus razors (see unfortunate experiment with wax previously). I also love Pantene Body Builder Hair Spray
What beauty faux pas are you always committing – even though you know you shouldn’t?
Like thousands of other mums out there collapsing into bed exhausted with my makeup on!
