Beauty Spot: Jo Twyford
Beauty Spot this week is introducing a new member of the Gossie family! Jo Twyford is a 21-year-old who has a love for hair and make-up! She’s a recent graduate from AUT’s Bachelor of Communications majoring in journalism and is looking forward to bringing you all the hottest looks, tips and tricks on Beauty Goss! What’s your earliest makeup memory?
When I was growing up my great aunt would always send me and my sister her left over makeup and we would keep it in the bottom drawer in our bathroom. I used to spend hours with my sister applying all the blushes, eye shadows, lip sticks and bronzers. We’d take turns doing each other up! It was so much fun- but I wish we had taken some photographic evidence of our makeovers.
What’s your daily makeup routine?
I stick to a very simple daily makeup routine. I cleanse and moisturise in the morning and at night. Then I’ll apply my Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, a tinted moisturiser, a couple of coats of mascara, blush on the apples of my cheeks and Lucas’ Papaw Ointment on my lips. I’ll also use concealer to cover any redness, blotches or spots.
How do you change this for evening?
When night time rolls around I go for three options:
1. A thick, black, liquid eyeliner- occasionally flicking it out at the ends.
2. A deep red lipstick- NARS Jungle Red is my fav!
3. A combo of both the eyeliner and red lippy.
I’ll also always apply eye shadow to jazz up my look. But it really depends on where I’m going, what I’m doing and who I’m seeing as to what makeup I wear.
Which do you prefer to enhance – eyes or lips?
As you can tell from above it depends how I’m feeling on the night. I love both options! But if I had to choose… well I can’t!
Do you have a favourite colour to wear on nails?
I like going colourful and standing out with nail polishes! For summer I’ll be wearing corals, pinks and cute pastel shades!
Do you have a signature scent?
I have a wee obsession with my ever growing perfume collection! But hands down my signature scent has to be Dolce & Gabbana’s The One! It was like love at first site when I found it four years ago!
What’s your favourite product?
I love mascara- long, beautiful, va va voom lashes! It’s the one product I always have to flick on before leaving the house!
What’s the one product you’re always on the hunt for?
I’m always on the hunt for a good concealer! Red spots, blotches, acne scarring, and cold sores-you always feel more confident when they’re hidden!
What would be a beauty faux-pas that you’ve done?
Growing up I’ve experienced a few beauty faux-pas but I think wearing eye liner on both my upper and lower eyelids is my worst. This look can work on some people but I’m not one of them! It makes my eyes look closed and in photos it looks like I’m squinting.
What’s the best advice you’ve been told?
Firstly wear sunscreen- use a moisturiser that has at least a SPF 15! And secondly, this piece of advice came from my Mum and an episode of Full House, the trick is to make it look like you aren’t wearing any makeup at all! Of course in some instances this doesn’t work but I like to use it as a general rule.
Is there a makeup trend you haven’t tried but would like to?
I’d like to give fake eye lashes a try. The celebs and models on mascara adverts always have to die for lashes and I’ve always been curious to see how I’d look with them! I might just have to have a look into this and let you know how I go!
