Sharyn Wakefield, aka The Edge’s Pop Bitch, has been on our airwaves for the past six years. This 25-year-old from Timaru went to Radio School in Wellington and worked on a More FM breakfast show in Masterton before becoming a Nightshow announcer on 94.2 The Edge four years ago. These days you can find her on The Edge from 12 to 3pm or keeping us up-to-date with the latest celebrity scandal when you’re driving home from work listening to Fletch and Vaughan. Discover her beauty secrets in this week’s Beauty Spot!

What’s your earliest makeup memory?
I used to do tap dancing competitions. We’d have to have these horrendous black and white eyelashes DRAWN ON- it was not pretty looking back.
What was your first perfume?
CK Be – Everyone in the 90’s cranked the Tommy Girl or CK didn’t they?
Do you have a signature scent now? What is it?
Viktor & Rolf – Flowerbomb – Seems a lot of people have cottoned on to it and everyone always comments on it!
Describe your everyday makeup look and what products you use:
Maybelline Eyeliner in Ebony Black, M.A.C liquid foundation, Thin Lizzy Bronzer, Avon Liquid Eyeshadow (I swear by it) and Lucas Papaw Ointment on the lips!
How do you change this for night?
Bit of liquid eyeliner with some smoky eyes and lippy colour depending on what I’m wearing.
Do you prefer eyes or lips?
Def Eyes! Lips are high maintenance! After a few wines your lip stick gets more and more out of control!
What was the last beauty product you bought?
M.A.C Coral tinted lipgloss
What’s on your shopping list to get?
I really, really, really want one of those Wonder Woman compacts from M.A.C!I’m in love.
What’s the biggest hair/makeup disaster you’ve had?
Where do I start? I cut my own fringe that I then had to gel back for months when I was 11, even worse girls at school told me I had sideburns so I shaved them off in third form – Bad idea.
I see you’ve had some pretty cool promo shots done for The Edge. What’s it like getting you’re your hair and makeup done for a photo-shoot?
FUN! I love getting my hair and makeup done. I’ve had my hair done by Lisa Boyd at Servilles in Ponsonby for the last three years. She’s awesome … I’ve converted almost 20 people to her – seriously.
What are some tips and tricks you have learnt from getting you hair and makeup done?
I have a pretty solid fringe and so was having trouble always getting it straight. My hairdresser showed me to brush it from side to side with the blow dryer – So much faster and works way better!
What’s your best beauty discovery and why?
Lucas Papaw Ointment – It’s good for everything! Even got rid of a scar I had when I scalded myself with a GHD! And Avon Liquid Eyeshadow – I always get comments on it and it’s so cheap too!
What is your ultimate beauty indulgence?
A decent foundation brush, I recently invested at M.A.C – worth every penny!
What advice would you tell the younger you if you could go back in time?
Eye cream and sunscreen. That is all.
What are your thoughts on cosmetic surgery – would you? Have you?
My boyfriend and I have a joke that when I’ve had babies he’s paying to have my boobs fixed, I think it’s up to the individual but Botox can sometimes look a bit ridiculous especially trout pouts full of collagen YUCK!!
What’s your beauty routine?
I do the Clinique 1,2,3 Routine (cleanse, toner, moisturise) then it’s deodorant, contact lenses, Cocoa Butter the body, makeup, fringe/hair, clothes haha I’ve nailed the order!
How long does it take you to get ready?
With shower half an hour, without 20mins?
In radio there are some interesting work hours. What are yours? And how do they influence your makeup/hair routine?
I worked 2pm till 10pm for the last four years when I was doing the Nightshow, so there was a lot of opportunity to be lazy. Now I work days (10am-6pm) I make a bit more of an effort, all the girls that work at The Edge are babes and into makeup and fashion in a bad way, everyone has their own style too so I feel like I need to keep up more than before!
Interviewing artists like Lady Gaga and Ke$ha must be pretty cool! Out of everyone you’ve interviewed who’s had the best and worst hair and makeup! And why?
Ke$ha for both. When I interviewed her before she got ready she just had basic makeup on – she was beautiful. Then she came on stage with her glitter and full on eye makeup- I couldn’t believe the difference. Also Avril Lavigne had amazing skin she looked like a doll and she’s mastered how to use eyeliner but it was her hair, that as stalker as it sounds, was amazing- I wanted to touch it to see if it was real!
