Cutting Edge
Pop the champers – Auckland hairstylist and owner of uber-cool salon Ryder, Greg Murrell, has been awarded with a Master’s Award by the Australian Fellowship of Hairdressers. It recognises and celebrates his 25 year career, which sounds like a really long time but considering most hairstylists start in their teens means he’s not as old as you think.
Held in conjunction with the Australian Hair Fashion Awards, Master’s Awards are presented annually to one person each from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
Here’s the official quote from the judges about him:
“Greg Murrell is without doubt one of New Zealand’s finest. His reputation precedes him in the hair and fashion industry in both New Zealand and Australia. Consumer and trade media have written of his talent, constantly highlighting his career accolades. Murrell’s work has taken him all over the world and his work challenges the creative edge in all of us. Murrell’s career clearly highlights the very essence of what the Master’s Award recognises and why he has been selected by the International Fellowship for Hairdressing and AHJ Publications as the 2009 AHFA NZ Masters Award recipient.” Phew.
It’s a global award and a pretty big deal – the judges comprise a bunch of top-notch hairdressers from around the world who award those whose photographic collections are right on trend demonstrating a superior level of creativity, skill and technical precision.
Greg’s a busy guy. As well as putting in the time on the floor in his salon his work has graced the pages of fashion magazines both here and in Aussie. He travels the world as an educator with KMS plus he has a longstanding collaboration with Zambesi and for years has been the creative director for hair for their runway shows.
