forever friday: McQueen
What terrible news to wake up to – one of fashion’s most experimental and unique designers was yesterday found dead in his London apartment.
According to the IHT, Lee Alexander McQueen, 40, left school at 16 to apprentice at two of the most prestigious English tailors Anderson & Sheppard and then Gieves and Hawkes. He worked in Italy briefly before returning to London to pursue a Master’s degree from the Central St Martins design college where legendary stylist Isabella Blow ‘discovered’ him and bought his entire thesis collection. It was through her, that he first found popularity with London magazine editors and stylists.
An impeccable tailor, his collections were anything but traditional and his runway shows entirely theatrical. Grazia Daily has a great photo selection of highlights including his ‘Highland Rape’ collection which made those in the audience squirm in their seats, the ring of fire and the truly clever AW06 show where Kate Moss opened it for him appearing as a hologram.
McQueen spent five years designing for French house Givenchy until 2001 when he also sold his eponymous label to the Gucci Group – a rival of Givenchy’s parent company LVMH.
It appears he took his life the night before his mother’s funeral. She passed away on February 2 and he was having trouble coping with his grief.
It’s such a shame that one of the most truly visionary and talented souls on this earth should depart but he surely did leave his mark – London fashion has never been the same since Lee’s arrival.
What’s your favourite McQueen memory or piece of clothing/bag…?
