Style by default
I was discussing hair and makeup trends with a friend today when I realised that for months now I have been doing the same thing with my hair every day (except when I had a couple of weddings to go to but they don’t count as I didn’t do my hair, I went to the salon). I decided to blow some cobwebs off my beloved GHDs and took the time to blowdry and straighten my hair which made me think more about my default hairstyle. I’ve adopted the topknot, which as my friend says is, ‘the model off-duty look that everyone aspires to’. It’s pretty much just a bun but on the top of the head.
I’ve taken to it purely by chance – it gets my long hair out of reach from my daughters grasping fingers and it also means I don’t have to spend the 45 minutes required to blowdry my hair into smooth submission. My hair needs to be dried properly to prevent it from turning into a big frizz and I rarely have the time to dry it completely – these days it’s a matter of quickly tipping my head upside down and drying close to the roots before whipping the length into a high bun. Its so easy, it’s ridiculous. I can’t even believe that it’s a look or could be considered a style and I think you should try it. Forget the old pony, do the topknot. You can even make it work for evening – like at Louis Vuitton Fall 09 (although please don’t tie a ribbon in your hair like Madonna did at the Met Ball – she’s far too old for that sort of carry on and it looked completely odd off the runway).
Having said that I do think that it’s a look for young and old alike. I think anyone in their twenties should adopt it if they haven’t already and those in their 30s should most definitely give it a go. I think it looks great on mature women too (just pare it back and keep it simple). The longer the hair the better – it gives you more of a knot – a big knot looks quite good. To give the knot more oompf you could backcomb it a bit and use a volumising mousse. Drying hair upside down is another fantastic way to get more air into hair. It also pays not to straighten it first, the messier, the better. Even if it does take half an hour to do, it should look like you just whipped it up as you ran out the door. Give it a go!
What’s your default hairstyle? I want to know…

My default hairstyle is pretty similar to you top know – pull my hair up in a highish pony then wrap it around itself and secure with another hairtie – basically a bun – this takes me from the shower to work to the gym! I am also a fan of the nape of teh neck pony – though my fringe is getting a bit long for this now. My hair has a natural wave but does tend to frizz – the way I combat this is incrediably lazy – wash it at night and go to bed with it wet – when I wake its in big loose curls with no frizz – perfect!
