Aimie Fiebig, makeup artist

We catch up with makeup artist Aimie Fiebig at home. Aimie has been painting faces for over ten years and has worked on many Australian and New Zealand fashion magazines. She’s also just started working part-time at TVNZ.

“My daily routine is fairly simple. I’ve just started cleansing my face in the morning with MAC Lightful cleanser because I feel like I need that extra exfoliant but also because I like to start with a clean canvas. I use The Organic Skin Company night moisturiser as a day cream and I add a couple of drops of River Veda Replenish Face Oil. I like a really rich moisturiser. On top of that I use Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, it’s oil free and has SPF 20 which I like. I use Lancome Genifique Yeux eye cream. Sometimes before I shower I use Jojoba Oil all over my body and then rinse it off in the shower, it makes my skin nice and dewy. Afterwards I apply Nivea Rich Moisturiser with Almond Oil – I love this body cream and will never get rid of it, it’s been a favourite for ages!

During the day I wear light makeup, Maybelline Great Lash mascara to define lashes and Clinique Super Fine brow pencil for brows – it’s a really great colour for blonde and has the perfect size pencil. I use La Mer lip balm, which I’m kind of obsessed with or I use Fresh lip balm which has a slight rose tint to it. I always wear a bit of blusher. At the moment my favourite is Smashbox Double Exposure Lip and Cheek colour in Express but I also really like Bobbi Brown cream blushes.

For night I either do an eye or a lip. If I’m doing a lip I wear YSL #1 in Red and leave everything else pretty nude – maybe a slick of Bobbi Brown Kohl along the lashline and I’ll open my lashes by curling them with a Shu Uemera Eye Lash curler. One of my favourite eye pallettes is a Chanel one, I think it’s called Water Pallette – it has a few bronzes and is all cream eyeshadows. I don’t like anything too irridescent on my eyes. I think if you’re going for that sparkly look it’s got to be full on shimmer, really crazy or not at all. You have to be careful with shimmer, especially the older you get as it can fall into creases and emphasis them. Chanel just brought out some new cream eye colours called L’Ombre that I’m dying to get my hands on – they are a cream with a slight metallic edge and look really pretty. Since I’ve been at TVNZ I’ve also been really getting into eye makeup and contouring using a really flat stone colour and contouring under the eyes and then using lots of mascara.

With nails I like a bright colour or a nude. When I was in the States recently I bought Geranium by Essie which has become my new favourite – it’s kind of an orange, like my Chanel jacket. I like classic nails, but definitely not a french tip. I never got into the beige or grey craze… didn’t like the way it looked against my skin.

I’m still pretty stuck on my signature fragrance Amarige by Givenchy, I still love that. But I also recently smelled Elie Saab and I like the smell of that. I also love Jo Malone Gardenia – they’re on my to-get list. For bed I love fresh lavender oil. I don’t really like sweet-vanilla scents and when it comes to scented candles I love Diptyque Tuberose or Gardenia. I wish I had bought Diptyque in the States because it was so much cheaper.

I don’t take supplements but I do have Vitamin C powder, I guess that’s a supplement. Every morning I have hot water and lemon first thing in the morning but a good old cup of tea is probably the best vitamin of the day, always puts me in a good mood.

When I look around me at all my things, I know where everything is from – there’s not one thing in here that I don’t know where it came from. Everything I either bought myself or friends and family gave me and it’s quite nice to have that around. Lots of memories, collected from all over the place. I love books, I think a great coffee-table book is an investment piece plus they are so inspiring. I love colour – everything is pretty colourful but I also like to have a clean background to start with. I like colour and white. I guess I tend to have a bit of pink but I’m not really a ‘pink’ girl as such. I don’t like ‘themes’ and I don’t like everything to be new, I like it to be a bit eclectic and sometimes a bit wrong – like sometimes putting things together that maybe you shouldn’t. I like everything mixed. I was reading an interior magazine ages ago and I read a quote from someone who said, “you should love every single thing, there shouldn’t be something in your house that you don’t love.” Everything around me I love, which is why I find it hard to get rid of things sometimes because I just love everything. One good thing about moving house is that you get to move everything. I love unpacking, it’s like finding your old friends. I do get bored quickly and I like to rearrange things, i might move a book or something. In fact, I like moving my bed around. As long as there’s good feng shui, I don’t like my feet going out the door or having a window above my head.”
