Races Special: Fascinators

Well Gossies the races season is upon us- a time of hair dos, beautiful makeup, crazy fascinators and just overall flawlessness! So here at Beauty Goss we’ve put together a week long ‘Races Special’ to act as a guide to help you look your best this races season! But we couldn’t have done it without the knowledge from our panel of talented experts!

Introducing The Down Low’s Amber Peebles who is a regular attendee of these glamorous occasions, Nikki Lovrich who’s a makeup artist and stylist for the stars, Natalie Chan who’s a leading New Zealand designer of stylish, funky fascinators and Mana Dave who is the creative director of Pony Xpress, New Zealand’s first blow wave and style bar in Newmarket!

For day three of our ‘Races Special’ we’ve got input from all our experts on one of the most crucial accessories of the races- the fascinator!

Amber:

-  Colour is back with vengeance and the races is your ultimate chance to get ‘Matchy Matchy’  and colour co-ordinate your heart out … this doesn’t include wear top to toe black though!
-  The races are all about your top two inches! This is your opportunity to wear a hat, facsinator or even a hatinator (which to me sounds like something that kills hats) but either way, if it goes on your head and looks fab, go for it!

Nikki:

- Fascinators seem to get bigger and more over the top every season! I think if you have the confidence to carry off dramatic head gear, then go for it- just make sure it doesn’t appear too overpowering or bigger than your head!
-  I personally prefer a simple, smaller fascinator and I’m loving the 1940′s style black satin bows that are around at the moment. They are attached to a headband and sit quite flat to the head- which looks perfect with a low chignon hair do.
-  I quite like a small pillbox hat with a tiny veil as well- particularly with a cute shift dress. Once again- you can’t beat the classics.
-  If you feel uncomfortable wearing a hat or fascinator a great alternative is to pull your hair back into a bun or ponytail and add a couple of large silk flowers. It’s a gorgeous look for summer and an easy glam way to add some colour to your outfit.

Natalie:

-  The top headwear trends this season are the oversized headbands with big bows, oversized floral head wear and full on hatinators! -  If you’re just new to the whole idea of even wearing anything on your head, we love our hottest seller; our colourful silk rosettes on clips which you can wear clusters of depending on the size you are happy with!
- Race day is about celebrating colour, so I love seeing colourful hatinators! However, if I had to choose, the berry colours are still going strong- I’m loving all shades of the citrus colours too!
-  I am in love with the “C’est La Vie” exclusive! The tiller hat on a headband with the height of peacock feathers! I love it all! Also, I love a headpiece which can be worn on its own, and yet can also be made different and new by adding coloured Rosettes on Clips and a netted veil to suit any outfit or event.
- Picking your headwear before your hairstyle is definitely the way to go. Therefore, a simple structured up-do usually works best, you want your hairstyle to compliment your look,  not compete with it.

Here are some of Natalie’s top picks from her fascinator range:

Mana:

-  We’ve seen two major fascinator trends coming through with our clients that are getting their hair done for raceday – bows of varying sizes and rosettes.  Because  both of these trends are in themselves quite detailed, they tend to suit styles that are slightly softer and very simple (avoid very fussy updos and structured looks).
-  Most fascinators are designed to wear slightly offset, so a soft assymetrical updo like our ‘Gloria’ look at Pony Xpress is perfect to balance this out – it has a side part with a sweeping fringe at the front and then at the back offset into the neck area there’s a toussled casual updo.

Keep an eye out for me at the Ellersile Boxing Day Races this year! I’ll be out snapping photos for our Facebook page and there will be prizes for the Gossies who have the best hair and makeup!

What will you be wearing on your head to the races this year?
Do you prefer the hat, fascinator or the hatinator?
