Races Special: ‘Keep it simple’ makeup!
Well Gossies the races season is upon us- a time of hair dos, beautiful makeup, crazy fascinators and just overall flawlessness! So here at Beauty Goss we’ve put together a week long ‘Races Special’ to act as a guide to help you look your best this races season! But we couldn’t have done it without the knowledge from our panel of talented experts!
Introducing The Down Low’s Amber Peebles who is a regular attendee of these glamorous occasions, Nikki Lovrich who’s a makeup artist and stylist for the stars, Natalie Chan who’s a leading New Zealand designer of stylish, funky fascinators and Mana Dave who is the creative director of Pony Xpress, New Zealand’s first blow wave and style bar in Newmarket!
To kick start this special we’ve spoken to Amber Peebles and Nikki Lovrich for their advice on what makeup to wear to the races! Here’s their tips and tricks!
Amber:
- I think fresh looking skin always looks pretty so go light on the foundation as this can often crease up in the hot sun. And speaking of creases that goes for eye makeup too.
- Be careful not to use to much eye shadow, leaning more towards long lasting products like MAC’s Liquid liner or Smashbox’s Water Proof eyeliner and follow with a fab mascara like MAC’s Zoom lash!
Nikki:
- When it comes to looking good at the races, the secret is to keep your makeup classic and simple. Dresses and suits on the day are often colourful and over the top glam, so it’s important not to overdo your face! As usual it comes down to the two simple makeup rules in fashion:
- If you choose to wear the brilliantly bright lips of the summer season, then keep the rest of your makeup clean and simple. Soft eye makeup in neutral tones looks great in contrast to bright red or pink lips, as does a 1950′s style flick of eyeliner.
- Alternatively, if you choose to go for the sexy smokey eye, choose a lipstick that is more natural, like a soft rose, brown or nude- that way your makeup will always look fresh and modern rather than overdone.
- When it comes to choosing your look for the day, decide on your outfit and accessories first, that way you can tone in your makeup colours. For example, if you’re wearing a simple black dress, you might like to wear a red handbag and shoes, then you can tie the look together with classic red lips al-la Audrey Hepburn.
Pro tip: Bobbi Brown’s new range of reds has a colour to suit everyone!
- Alternatively if your outfit is a bright summery print and you choose glam metallic accessories, then go for soft and natural colours on your face and add some shimmery cheeks and nude glossy lips- this look always makes me think of the gorgeous J-Lo who never seems to put a foot wrong in the makeup department!
Keep an eye out for me at the Ellersile Boxing Day Races this year! I’ll be out snapping photos for our Facebook page and there will be prizes for the Gossies who have the best hair and makeup!
