Races Special: Make it last!
Well Gossies the races season is upon us- a time of hair dos, beautiful makeup, crazy fascinators and just overall flawlessness! So here at Beauty Goss we’ve put together a week long ‘Races Special’ to act as a guide to help you look your best this races season! But we couldn’t have done it without the knowledge from our panel of talented experts!
Introducing The Down Low’s Amber Peebles who is a regular attendee of these glamorous occasions, Nikki Lovrich who’s a makeup artist and stylist for the stars, Natalie Chan who’s a leading New Zealand designer of stylish, funky fascinators and Mana Dave who is the creative director of Pony Xpress, New Zealand’s first blow wave and style bar in Newmarket!

We’re almost at the end of our ‘Races Special’ here at Beauty Goss but we can’t wrap it up without some advice on how to make our hair and makeup go the distance! Amber, Nikki and Mana have dished out advice to help you look good all day long!
Amber:
- I usually will pop my Proactiv Refining Mask earlier (it always makes my skin look tight and foundation etc goes on smoothly).
- Before foundation I use The SmashBox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (which is also great because it has SPF15). These steps followed by good quality make up help it stay looking fresh all day.
- And for hair I do my best to make it secure and then cross my fingers!
Nikki:
- It’s important to start with a long lasting base. When applying your foundation, wait for your moisturiser to settle in first, otherwise you will go shiny more quickly.
- When it comes to sunscreen, choose a foundation that already has an SPF, (I love L’Oreal True Match) as if you apply a creamy sunblock under your foundation it won’t last as long.
- Makeup primers can also do the trick- I have had great success with the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer that goes on matte and makes the foundation last longer.
- Mineral powder is also a must have product for long summer days. Dust it over your foundation (or even on its own if your skin doesn’t need the extra coverage) and it instantly absorbs any oily residue, leaving a satin finish. My favourite is Elizabeth Arden’s Pure Finish Mineral Foundation. This also has a sunscreen for extra protection!
- If you get oily skin during the day I recommend you carry a compact of mineral powder for quick touch ups. MAC & Jane Iredale also do fabulous oil absorbing papers that you can dab onto your shin and they instantly absorb the shine.
Mana:
- Try a hairstyle that’s going to work with the natural texture of your hair – if you have curl, then work with it; if your hair is straight, then make that work for you. Your hair style will have a much better chance of lasting the day if you’re not trying to fight against it’s natural tendencies.
- If you do decide to defy nature, then a great anti-humidity spray like Redken’s workforce will keep moisture away and Matrix Design Pulse Hair Lock spray will give you all day hold!
Keep an eye out for me at the Ellersile Boxing Day Races this year! I’ll be out snapping photos for our Facebook page and there will be prizes for the Gossies who have the best hair and makeup!
What are your tips and tricks do you have for making your hair and makeup last?
Are you going to the Ellerslie Boxing Day Races this year?
